SEUSSICAL
San Diego Junior Theatre – April 2019
Oh the thinks you can think when you think about Seuss costumes. This show has always been dear to my heart as it was one of the first musicals my daughter performed in. I also just really like the music. I helped with costumes on this show when my daughter was cast in it in 2010 and came back to Junior Theatre to design the show in 2019. I rethought some of these costumes 4 or 5 times in my head before construction began. But rethought it all one final time after meeting with the director and hearing her different take on the look of the show. This version of the story envisions the characters as people (children mostly) on a playground bringing the story to life with their imagination. A face painter becomes The Cat in the Hat, a soccer mom becomes a general, and sporting equipment become props.
I’ll admit it took me a little time to give in to this vision, but once I did I had so much fun with it. There are so many little details in there like The Wickersham Bro’s Skate Co. logos on the skaters’ T-shirts and the WYSO logo on the soccer teams’ jerseys. The audience probably didn’t notice most of these, but I knew they were there.
